ICAO English Exam FCL.055 (A-C)
Register for an exam in accordance with ICAO standards. The exam is aimed at pilots who need to demonstrate an understanding of spoken language and appropriately react in usual and abnormal situations.
What we will need from you:
Copy of the pilot licence (if you already have one).
Notice:
Applicants who do not hold a license issued from the Czech Republic must check for themselves whether this exam will be recognized by the relevant CAA of the country.
Prerequisites
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to understand spoken language and to respond appropriately in standard and non-standard situations that a pilot may encounter in the exercise of his/her profession. A retake is available no sooner than 30 days after the last examination date. The number of attempts is unlimited. We provide individual dates to register for the test according to the customer’s wishes. If a candidate is unable to attend the examination on the scheduled date, a written apology is required in advance.
Intermediate level of English, level B2 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
If the applicant cannot appear for the exam on the scheduled date, it is necessary to apologize in advance in writing.
Duration
The test takes 30-40 minutes
Oral part - approx. 30-40 min
The test of the English language according to ICAO standards includes professionally oriented and general English, it is focused on comprehension of spoken language and ability to speak, on coping with common and unusual situations, both work and non-work. The entire test is administered in English only. The pilot must demonstrate the ability to understand spoken language, and the ability to respond with clarity in standard and non-standard situations. Correctness of procedures according to regulations is not assessed, only language ability. The identity of the applicant will be verified before the oral part begins.
Structure of the test
- Introductory part (approx. 5-10 min.)
1.1. Small talk – (Normal conversation on various topics – professional, general, etc.)
- Listening (approx. 15 min.)
2.1 Listening to authentic communication between pilot and ATC.
2 examples of ATC communication, 2-4 minutes each (native and non-native speakers) – each example is followed by additional comprehension questions from the examiner
- Situations (approx. 15 min.)
3.1 Question focusing on pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight situations – situations (standard and non-standard) that a pilot may encounter in the context of the job
- Picture description
4.1.Description of a picture related to flying and related questions.
Two examiners are always present during the test – (language specialist and pilot-examiner), approved by the CAA on the basis of proven training and experience), and an audio recording of the test is made and evaluated by both examiners.
Required level – ICAO level 4 (operational).
Certificate

Successful participants will receive a certificate. The exam is graded using the ICAO RATING SCALE. For a pilot, the minimum level is 4 with a validity of 4 years. Level 5 is valid for 6 years and level 6, which corresponds to the level of a native speaker, is valid indefinitely. After successfully passing the test, an ICAO certificate will be issued.
